Why Manhattan Couples Choose a New Jersey Estate Wedding Venue
Updated: 3 days ago
Many of our inquiries come from Manhattan and Brooklyn. Couples love the city, but they cannot picture their wedding inside it. They want their families in one room, and a front door that belongs to them for the night. That is what brings them out to Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury, a New Jersey estate wedding venue set on eighteen secluded acres in Monmouth County.
What Manhattan Couples Find at a New Jersey Estate Wedding Venue
The short answer is space, privacy, and a house with a story. Below is what couples tell us made the drive worth it.
One Wedding at a Time
We host one event at a time. No other couple in the lobby, and no other celebration taking place alongside yours. The privacy is physical, not just scheduled. The mansion sits about a thousand feet back from the road, and you reach it on a winding blue stone driveway lined with large maple trees. It is a slow arrival on purpose. By the time your guests park, the city is already somewhere else.
A House with a Past
In 1908, Dr. Ernest Fahnestock, a New York surgeon, bought the George W. Stillwell farm in Shrewsbury and named it Shadow Brook Farm. He hired architects Lewis Colt Albro and Harrie T. Lindeberg to design a Georgian style mansion, and construction finished in the summer of 1910. It opened as a restaurant in 1943, and over the decades that followed the guest list came to include Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger and Robert Kennedy.
Here is the part city couples love. The estate’s history includes connections to notable New York landmarks and figures. The golden thirty two light chandelier at the focal point of the stairway came from the main ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel. The brass handrails on the staircase, along with the art deco chandeliers and sconces in the Regency Room, came from the Paramount Theater. Ceiling panels in the two front galleries came from the Villard Houses on Madison Avenue. There is more history worth reading.
Room for 600 Guests
Large weddings are hard to seat well. Our Grand Ballroom, added in a 2019 expansion, accommodates up to 600 guests. Ceilings rise thirty feet. There is a Newport inspired fireplace, crystal chandeliers, theatrical lighting, a dueling grand staircase and a big swing band stage, so a full band gets a stage instead of a corner.
Older rooms carry a different mood. Off the Oak Room, with its beamed ceiling and paneled walls, the Horseshoe Bar has a brass rail adorned with horse heads, made by a Monmouth County artisan.
We offer outdoor ceremonies on the grounds, and vows in the sunlit pavilion keep everything on one property. For guests coming from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bergen County or Morris County, one address beats two.
The Food and the Bar
Guests are met on arrival with champagne on silver trays, garnished with fresh strawberries and edible flowers, passed butler style. The cocktail hour is what people talk about afterward. There is a raw bar with little neck clams and blue point oysters, a sushi and sashimi bar, a caviar and frozen vodka station in a hand carved ice sculpture, a salumeria, a carving station, and pasta stations with choices like lobster ravioli in brandy cream.
Dinner follows at the table. A Maryland crab cake, a mango sorbet intermezzo, then entrees such as chateaubriand with burgundy truffle reduction or pan seared halibut. Vegetarian selections are available on request. Dessert brings your custom designed tiered cake and a warm Valrhona chocolate souffle. The open bar runs throughout, with premium liquors, California wines, champagne, and imported beers. The full wedding catering menu goes further than we can here.
Conclusion
Photographs undersell this place. They cannot show how quiet it gets past the maples, or how the Biltmore chandelier looks when someone turns it on.
